The little mouse Quill has now returned on the Quest 2 and I have thrown myself into the adventure for you (a test without spoilers).

We had to wait a long time, but now it is finally so time. Moss Book II will finally be released for the Quest 2 on July 21, 2021. The latest game around the mouse heroine Quill has so far only been released on the PSVR and that already several months ago. That’s why I’m even more pleased that more players can now help Quill on her difficult journey. I jumped into the adventure for you in advance and braved any hellish temperatures to give you a first glimpse into the world of Moss Book II. Let’s hit the road and see if the latest installment in the Moss series can deliver what it promised on the Meta Quest 2.

Can I start with Moss Book 2 or should I play the predecessor?

There are supposedly still players who haven’t played Moss yet. In addition, there are many VR newcomers who have only recently discovered VR for themselves. This raises the question of whether you can start with Moss Book II or whether you should have played the predecessor beforehand. Here’s some good news. You can get started with Moss Book II without ever having played its predecessor. At the beginning of Moss Book II you’ll get a short review of the events of the first part, and after that you’ll be able to follow directly the story of the second part without any problems. Nevertheless, the best way to dive into the world of the little mouse Quill is to have played the first game. Not only because the story of Moss Book II seamlessly continues from the end of the first game. But also because the first installment of Moss is still a really good VR adventure that you should not miss. If you’re interested, I’ll leave you the links to the different versions right below.

The first part of the Moss series is still a very good game

An old recipe with new ingredients — tastes really good to me

Why change a recipe if it’s a success? Exactly. The development team of Moss Book II also adheres to this. Players of the first part will feel right at home and will recognize many similarities to the first part of the series. Many mechanics have been retained and nothing has changed in the basic principle. However, here and there there are a few quality-of-life improvements that make the gameplay a bit more rounded. For example, you have more possibilities to intervene directly in the world of Quill and this makes puzzles a lot more exciting. You also get a new weapon that makes your life a bit easier. Unfortunately, the game world still mostly revolves around the mouse heroine Quill and you are completely ignored by enemies. As much fun as it is to be the little mouse’s sidekick, I would have liked to see a bit more tension here.

Quill’s new hammer is suitable for bashing monsters and even solving puzzles

A feast for the eyes for a Quest 2 game

Here I could almost hardly believe my eyes. Where the Quest version of Moss was quite a visual downgrade from the PC version and partially ravished my eyes with blurry textures, the second part shows its muscles here. You can immediately see that the developers have gained more experience adapting their game to the Quest 2 hardware. The game comes with beautiful textures and stunning environments. One reason, however, will be that the game is only playable on the Quest 2. Users of an old Quest will unfortunately be left out in the cold. The Quest 2’s hardware can thus be maxed out to display the world in its full glory. However, this is at the expense of the Quest players. The game looks beautiful, though. I often stood there with my mouth open, admiring the surroundings, even though a small mouse was waiting to continue the adventure.

This game is a beauty and even so on Quest 2

What about PCVR?

This is an issue in itself. While the developers always claim that they want to offer the game on all available VR platforms, unfortunately these ports are only coming to the end users bit by bit. While we now have a PSVR and Quest 2 version, we are still waiting for a SteamVR version for PCVR players. Unfortunately, there is no news here about new ports and I hope we will get a PCVR version in the near future. For owners of a Quest 2, I would still advise the Quest version, as it is graphically and playfully very good. For everyone else, it’s just wait and see.

POV: PCVR users asking the devs where the PCVR version is

Conclusion: A great adventure for VR veterans and VR newbies alike.

I had rarely seen such a beautifully designed game on my Quest 2. The world of Moss Book II shines with a graphic splendor and attention to detail that is rarely seen in a Quest 2 game. Moss Book II is also quite impressive in terms of gameplay. The newly designed puzzles and new features compared to the first part kept me on the ball throughout my 6 hour journey. If you like action-adventure games or are looking for a great Quest 2 game, I can highly recommend Moss Book II. For fans of the first part, it’s even a must-buy in my eyes. Even VR newcomers will get their money’s worth and don’t have to fear nausea or dizziness due to the level design. The only criticism is that I would have liked more interaction with the player. Unfortunately, only Quill reacts to us (besides NPCs) and we are just hot air for the enemies of the world. Despite everything, one of the best VR adventure games I’ve ever seen. Keep it up!
